We are hitting an issue in GWD when other applications have exclusive locks on files.

Here is the scenario:

- A user uses an application like BRIEF, dtSearch, etc to view a file. The file is locked for writing (no other application can write to the file).
- Same user or others open the file in GWD and make a change.
- The user making the change tries to save the file, they will get the following error message :
"Cannot open c:\example.txt file. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected" with an OK button.
- The user clicks ok, gets another message:
"Another application has updated file C:\example.txt Reload it?"
- If the user clicks NO, nothing happens, the file is still safe but not saved to the disk. If they click YES, the file refreshes as a blank file and the changes are lost from the open document AND the file is wiped out on the drive!!!

So the first question is, what triggers GWD to think that the file has changed even if the other applications don't seem to have made changes to it?

The second one, why is the file wiped out? Even a backupfile is not created, the file is totally lost.

This is pretty urgent.

I trying to reconstruct your scenario. It is quite hard to find an application
which locks the file under Windows 2000, so I was need to develop a small
program that locks an file. When the file is locked for writing everything
goes as it should. You cannot save the file (file is locked) and after
"Another application has updated file C:\example.txt Reload it?" message,
GWD Text Editor reloads the file. When the file is locked for reading and
writting, you cannot save the file and after "Another application has
updated file C:\example.txt Reload it?" message box if the user clicks OK,
GWD Text Editor attempts to reload file. Because file is locked for reading,
this is impossible and GWD Text Editor closes the document window.
File on the disk is not wiped out, in fact that file is protected by OS
and only the process that locked the file can change it.

The only thing that GWD Text Editor should do is to check if the file is locked
before reloading the file.

Could you tell me under which version of Windows you works.

Windows NT 4.0. The software package that locks the file is called dtSearch (www.dtsearch.com).

For now, you can download GWD Text Editor patched version (www.gwdsoft.com/downloads/gtedit32.zip) which checks if the file is locked before reloading it.
